Denmark, Ho!

Clarification: We are moving to Denmark.

Long story short, Tim accepted a two-year post-doctorate position in Denmark that begins this August.  (He was actually selected out of 96 applicants - I am so proud!)  So we are moving.  In late July.

Isaac and I have been living in Northeast Georgia for just over half a year; Tim in South Carolina except on weekends.  Another long story (explained in further detail here), but the fact of the matter is that we will finally be living in the same house again - albeit in another country.

And I just found out.  A couple weeks ago.  (I was sworn to midling secrecy lest I jinx the entire thing and we miss out on our Great European Adventure.)

Naturally, the first thing I thought was something akin to the following: The Vikings!  Hans Christian Anderson!  Hamlet!  (The extent of my knowledge regarding Denmark.)

(At this point I should probably refrain from admitting that I briefly envisioned tall blonds trading pastries as legal tender.)

Since then, I have learned the following important information:

1.  Waiters don't get tips.
2.  Nude beaches.
3.  Invented Legos.
4.  Love salt (I feel akin to them already).
5.  Is considered the happiest place in the world.  Presumably because the Danes have very low expectations and are thus forever pleasantly surprised by life.  How's that for a national trait?

With all this useful head knowledge I should fit right in, yes?

I am going to live here:

I have always wanted to have a massive gold ball in my front yard.  Imagine all the things I could do with it.

(Actually we will probably be living in Copenhagen or Roskilde.)

As it is incredibly expensive to mail household items to Denmark, we will only be taking what will fit into our luggage.  I'm thinking electronics, clothing, my art supplies, several matchbox cars and a small blue elephant (what else?).  Lucky for me, I'm not very attached to my stuff.  And eventually we'll hit up Ikea.

Needless to say, I am very excited.
Except I will miss my family.

And I am also wondering where I will pluck my eyebrows without a car mirror.  Suggestions, anyone?

  1. Lauren,
What an exciting adventure! You will love it there. Pastries are delish over there, chocolate is oh my God and the culture is so laid back.

  2. Yeah! I'm so excited for you guys. I can just see you in Denmark... well actually I've never given that particular visual a lot of thought before, but I'll bet you'll have a great time living there. :D

I also know Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) is from there, which I know won't exactly thrill you. On the other hand, he's a very artsy person, so maybe that says something, not at all sure what. ;)

I've heard that about them being the happiest for their low expectations. I'm keen to hear if that's true. :)
