Indian Summer

I'm a little sad to be missing fall in the mountains this year, especially the colors - golden yellow, crimson red, burnt orange; the way the trees look when you drive over the top of Richard Russel highway.  I'll always love summer most, but fall is the season for camping and outdoor fires, potlucks and hot cider, family and good books, scarves and sweaters ...

... And there is something so invigorating about how the air changes from an overheated summer to a fresh, crisp coolness - when you wake up and go outside in the morning and just feel alive.  It is the prelude before winter hibernation.

...And so many orchards circled the village that on some crisp October afternoons the whole wold smelled like pie.  - Alice Hoffman, Here on Earth

... The important thing was what the colors stood for, the taste of hard applies ... and the exact quality of the sun on the last warm day in October.  A photograph would have flattened the scene into a happy moment, whereas what I felt was gut rapture.  The fleeting certainty that I deserved the space I'd been taking up on this earth, and all the air I had breathed.  - Kingsolver, Homeland

The autumn leaves blew over the moonlit pavement in such a way as to make the girl who was moving there seem fixed to a sliding walk, letting the motion of the wind and the leaves carry her forward ...The trees overhead made a great sound of letting down their dry rain. - Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451

But then fall comes ...It settles in the way an old friend will settle into your favorite chair and take out his pipe and light it and then fill the afternoon with stories of places he has been and things he has done since last he saw you.   - Stephen King, Salem's Lot

The perfect weather of Indian Summer lengthened and lingered, warm sunny days were followed by brisk nights ...  - Wallace Stegner, Remembering Laughter

Of course, fall isn't just about preparing for winter. It's also about sitting on the patio in a worn wool sweater and warming your hands over the swirl of steam rising from a coffee cup. It's about walking across a darkened yard and seeing a flight of geese cross the face of a full moon. It's about settling in, relishing sights and sensations of a world slowing down.  - Brent Olso

 ... happy fall, everyone.

  1. Gorgeous! Love all the photos...the food, the feathers...but the second one is my absolute fave. That vision of the cool mist rising over fence, tree and field in the glint of sunrise. Perfect!

I am warming apple cider with mulling spices as I type this. Is there anything better on a chilly October day? I have not read all the books you quoted. Now I have a new list for my library visit tomorrow. Thank you!

Happy October! Just think - next October you'll be able to share the mountain colors with Isaac. That is certainly something to look forward to. :)

  3. For a gorgeous season... In tribute of, rather. Too many people skip straight ahead to Christmas and miss the autumn altogether. It's a shame.

  5. Well I envy the sunshine too. Here in DK it is overcast 90 percent of the time, and can't seem to make up its mind the remaining 10. ;)
