The One With All The Stuff

As of this week, we have officially sold our house in South Carolina.  It’s been on the market for over a year now, so you can imagine how thrilled we are to say our final goodbyes.
And also a bit overwhelmed.
Although most of my stuff was moved out over six months ago when the kiddo and I moved to Georgia (long story), I forgot about the things I’d left behind, not to mention Tim’s office space and tool shed.  Let me rephrase: I didn’t forget; I just chose not to think about where it would all go once the house sold.
The cabin I am renting in Georgia is tiny.  Stick-it-in-an-envelope-and-mail-it-for-a-buck-fifty kind of tiny, if you know what I mean.  Thus we are improvising with my super-woman organizational skills, several gray Tupperware tubs, the back porch, and piles.  Lots and lots of piles (to-be-trashed, to-be-kept, to-be-gifted).
Poor Tim is left with most of the burden because he is afraid to let me help.  He is a bit of a pack-rat, and I, on the other hand, much prefer to get rid of EVERYTHING.

Do you remember that scene from Friends in which Chandler discovers Monica's Junk Closet?  This is what Tim's shed looks like.  Times fifteen.

This is Tim: Save the planet!  It's where I keep all my stuff.
This is me: Do we need this?  No?  Get rid of it!  Yes?  Eh, get rid of it!  Does this have a place to go?  No?  Get rid of it!  Yes?  Well, how does it look there?  Messy?  Get rid of it!  Not messy?  It can stay, but I’ll probably just get rid of it when we move again.

Fortunately, we love each other despite ourselves.
Since we don’t know where we’ll be moving next, I’m not entirely sure what needs to be kept and what we will eventually have to dispose of regardless.  This makes me crazy.
But other than that . . .  it’s been great.  After all, we sold the house!

  1. Congratulations on selling. I love the feeling and freedom of "getting rid of" stuff. Twice in our lives we sold and/or gave away everything we owned and traveled. We lived in a VW van for awhile in the late 80's and all we owned was in that van. So free!!! Hugs Karen

  3. Yes exactly! To me, that feeling is sort of like a natural high. To my husband: DEATH!

  5. Yeah... moving isn't a great thing for me. I'm definitely a pack rat. I have a family member that literally put all of her belongings into three rubbermaid containers when she moved. I wish I could imagine that.

  6. i love getting rid of things. big piles of "stuff" is stressful.

i know, hard to believe. YOU helped me pack to move to washington, what a nightmare, hah! but now that i've got my own house and i'm in charge (well, 3/4 in charge) of what goes in and what goes out, i'm a bit more picky.

but i'm trying to be MORE picky.

if you come to washington to visit me ever, you can throw things away and i won't even mind! :D

  8. Congrats on the sale! :) I love your sense of humor ("no? get rid of it. yes? get rid of it anyway!") and I understand - I had a yard sale last fall in preperation for moving and got rid of almost everything. Now I regret some of those things being gone, but even now I look around the guest room we call home for a little longer and think "It's on the floor - get rid of it!!" even though IT is my slippers, my laptop cord, and a pair of dirty jeans (one of only two pairs I own). Eeep! :P

  9. Congrats! A little over a year ago, I decided to clear out all of the "stuff" I had gathered through the years. After all, I wanted to travel and write. I took a deep breath and started tossing. Yesterday, I finally accepted the loss.
