Mixtape

I used to collect cassette tapes as a kid.  I found two of them while rifling through an old trunk, the single remaining artifacts of my depleted collection.

The first was Plumb's self-titled debut album, the one with the fork and the plumb on the cover.  The second was an unmarked, mixed tape.

Today, the majority of my music collection (or rather, what I've managed to recollect since The Incident of the Missing MP3 File), is stored on my computer.  The rest of it is tucked safely away in my car console, half store-bought and the other half burned.  I still call them mixed tapes.

My most recent mixed tape is a gift from my sister entitled Car Music for Lauren.  She knew I was getting burned out on The Weepies, as it had been stashed in the CD player for about a month and a half straight.  When I find something I love, I tend to get tunnel vision.  Translation: I hit repeat until I'm sick of it.

Thought I'd share the Playlist (★ I put stars next to my favorites):

1.  If I Die Young - The Band Perry
2.  Modern Nature - Sondre Lerche
3.  I'm Only Happy When It Rains - Garbage
4.  So Sorry - Feist
5.  Closing Time - Semisonic
6.  Animal Instinct - Cranberries
7.  1, 2, 3, 4 - Feist
8.  Spin - Lifehouse
9.  When You Come Back Down -Nickel Creek
10. Slide - Goo Goo Dolls
11. The Way I Am - Ingrid Michaelson
12. Suddenly I See - Tunstall
13. Across The Universe - Beatles
14. Somewhere Only We Know - Keane
15. Better - Regina Spektor
16. One Is The Loneliest Number - Aimee Mann.  I skip this one.
17. It's Good To Be In Love - Imogen Heap
18. Black Horse - Tunstall
19. Call It Off - Tegan and Sara.  ★

What's on your top mixed tapes?

  3. I make "mix tape" cd's also. I name them, Mix tape #.., also Summer Mix, etc. I also date them so I know when I made them. I love most of the songs on that mix list! I stopped by to say hi and thanks for commenting on my blog. Your blog looks great!

  4. I have a lot--most from Napster Days! I got creative with my titles and would write stuff like "Just A Mix (insert # here)" or "Jacob's Acoustics" (with my favorite acoustic songs). I actually just went through them and burned a majority of them onto my computer so I wouldn't lose them.

As for actual tapes I used to make mixes featuring Embodyment and Chevelle all the time... this was when I wasn't recording my "own" radio style improvised skits with my tape recorder too. And yes I still have a majority of them.

  6. Thanks for all the feedback, loves!

My favorites are mixed takes that are titled and dated - they always bring back specific memories. Audio scrapbooks.

    I also love Pandora.

  9. Blitzen Trapper is awesome.

I stopped dating my my playlists. If the playlist was built well enough and some extraordinary (positive or negative) happened to me around the time it was on heavy rotation, the song usually provides the memory for me.

There are several songs that remind me of past girlfriends. Just a song to everyone else, special to me.

  10. Incredible, isn't it? How songs can bring back so many memories?

  11. I may be the oldest poster here - but the whole mix tape subject drew me in from Seeded Buzz. I grew up in the vinyl era, skipped the whole 8-track thing, wish I had the $$ spent on recorded music in general - including cassette tapes. Never being one for popular radio as I don't like the predictability - love the post, time to stop rambling and write off the inspiration!

  12. You didn't star the Regina track - surely that was an oversight.

  13. I do love her, Nathan. . . but this song isn't my favorite of hers.
