Pie

It is not unknown for fathers with a brace of daughters to reel off their names in order of birth when summoning the youngest, and I had long ago become accustomed to being called "Ophelia Daphne Flavia, damn it."

I've added the above quote to my Quotations Page.  Only my favorite quotes make the cut, and whereas the whole thing is sorely  neglected and there are numerous quotes missing which should be included, I do at least have a small collection thus far.

To be perfectly honest, I'm too lazy to go searching through my tried-and-true library for other beloved quotes.  At least for now, I'll just have to borrow from the short pile in the corner labeled with the invisible sign that says "To Read, At Some Point."

This one made the cut because, as any daughter belonging to a large family would agree, it hit close to home - but with humor!  With a Sabrina, a Stephanie, and a Sarah in my immediate family, not to mention a few other "S's" just outside, I am naturally accustomed to having my dad call me "SssssLauren."  I can only think what my youngest sister will experience with a name like Lydia, poor thing (a perfectly lovely name if it weren't for all the "s's").  Something to the effect of Sssss-Laur-Idia, I imagine.  Go ahead, roll that one off quick-like.

Sounds like a disease if you ask me.

As you can see, I am shamelessly exploiting this post in order to paste up photographs of girls who may or may not be sisters.

At any rate, I'm thinking that this book will soon be added to my Official List of Beloved Novels.  It all hinges on the ending, of course (don't give it away or else).  To suspect its possible candidacy this early on is surprising to say the least.  It's a rather short list.  There are only six or seven books on it right now.

I've got to tell you, though, the title tipped me off.  Any book with the word "pie" on the cover is bound to be good.   This one makes me want to have tea and biscuits and say things like "bloody" and "blinkered" and "skint."  I just love British Lit.

. . . And on that note, let me add a quick word for the darling who loaned me the thing: thank you, thank you, thank you.  There is a special spot in Heaven for people who loan out such good books, I'm quite sure of it.

My sister Sarah and me.  Taken by Stephie.

Cheerio, loves!

  1. sss laur idia... Can I call her that next time I see her? Yes my parents do that sometimes and we all have our own initials! "Hey Chlomily" "Hey SsHannah" or here's a funny one "hey Jjjjohnphoebe" not even the same gender haha. Oh well we actually all do it sometimes.

  8. It's so true! I feel the worst for Oliva. Dunno why, but it's easier to say 'Lily' than 'Livi', so we have this whole unfair situation where Livi was here first, but she still gets stuck with a younger sibling's name all the time. :P

I loved that quote! And I'm so chuffed that you're enjoying your book! I shouldn't say that I knew you would, cuz there was a chance you wouldn't, but I hoped you would. (I knew you would) Anyway, one good pie book deserves another! You're definitely going to that special place in heaven, ducky. :D

  12. Haha! I loved this post. I'm the oldest of six siblings, and five of us are girls! Being the oldest, I didn't experience being called by other names all that often, but I certainly heard my sisters called "Marissa, Meghan, Brianna, dammit!" Well, close to that. If you take out the dammit.

*sigh* I wish I were closer to my sistahs!

  13. My mother used to do this too - brothers' names and sisters' names were interchangeable... I only have two children - one of each, so I should be able to avoid doing it? Maybe?

My children were born in England and they talk posh at me all the time!
