(I would not, could not, Sam-I-Am).
Otherwise Titled: A Toddler's Food Diary.
The kiddo’s appetite goes up and down, up and down (my version of The Wheels on the Bus, give or take a few syllables).
Some days he acts as if eating would kill him. He refuses everything I offer by closing his eyes and regally waving his little hand. “I couldn’t possibly be bothered with food right now – I’m in the middle of staging a war between my Toy Story dolls and my matchbox cars!”
(It eventually occurred to me that perhaps I was giving him too much juice, thereby running the risk of off-setting his appetite. My little human juice box. Now he only gets one cup of diluted juice a day. This helped a bit.)
Other days he acts like he’s made a New Year’s Resolution to lose weight, and it’s the final evening before his self-inflicted diet must begin. On those days his favorite phrase goes something like this: “Eat NOW!” The kid weighs next to nothing, but boy can he eat when he’s in the mood.
Take today, for instance. Breakfast: Oatmeal, 1 banana, 1 fruit cup, 1 granola bar, and 1 piece of Raisin-bread toast. Snack: 6 peanut butter on wheat crackers. Lunch: Large bowl of rice and veggies and a boatload of cantaloupe. He just asked me for another banana, so I checked his sock drawer. He hasn’t been stashing the food in there.
I’m beginning to think it’ll all just balance out by the end of the month. Today he’s especially heavy; tomorrow – as light as a feather I bet!
. . . Do your toddlers do this?
annie does this all the time.
ReplyDelete^^ that's me trying to relate.
Thank you, Ayla.

Oh my gosh, my 2-year-old is SO frustrating when it comes to food. I've come to the point where I just say "this is her first breakfast" because I know she won't like it and there will be a "second breakfast" and sometimes a "third." I just keep trying till I find something she's actually in the mood for.
ReplyDeleteWell. . . sorry for all the struggles but happy to know I'm not alone!
ReplyDeleteIsaac has mini-meals all day. I've pretty much settled on a regular meal-plan for the week. . .but one week he'll love it and the next he won't. Go figure.
We're in the "you'll just refuse to eat at all if you don't like it, and mommy's too paranoid to see how long you'll last" phase. When does the "sit still till you finish your plate" phase begin?
